Commissioning Engineer

Position overview

Support long-term utility substation projects through outage coordination, relay testing, functional testing, troubleshooting, and full substation commissioning.

This is not a wiring position. Union wiremen handle wiring; the Commissioning Engineer provides technical oversight, testing, coordination, and verification.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage and support outage planning and coordination.
  • Review electrical drawings, schematics, and P&C documentation.
  • Determine proper work sequencing and circuit and cable isolation.
  • Coordinate field activities with wiremen, P&C technicians, engineering teams, and utility personnel.
  • Answer technical questions during field execution.
  • Apply relay settings from the design team.
  • Perform relay testing, functional testing, and verification prior to energization.
  • Troubleshoot relay, control, wiring, and commissioning issues.
  • Complete commissioning reports, testing documentation, and closeout packages.
  • Work as part of a commissioning team on active substation sites.

Key qualifications

  • Strong substation commissioning experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings.
  • Knowledge of isolation procedures and outage sequencing.
  • Experience with OCBs and SF6 breakers.
  • Hands-on experience with SEL relays and Doble 6150 test sets.
  • Relay testing and functional testing experience.
  • Familiarity with CTs, PTs, breakers, disconnects, transformers, and related equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and communication skills.
  • Ability to work safely in energized substation environments.
  • Willingness to travel and work overtime.

Schedule, travel & compensation

  • Typical weeks are approximately 50 hours, with strong overtime opportunities.
  • Peak outage periods can exceed 80 hours; slower periods include paid standby.
  • Paid standby includes eight hours of pay even when an assignment is shorter.
  • Sundays are paid at 1.5x; every third weekend is typically off.
  • Busy seasons are spring and fall.

  • Transformer upgrades.
  • SCADA changes.
  • New substation construction.
  • Greenfield and brownfield projects.
  • Retrofit and modernization work.
  • Relay and protection system modifications.
